„Europe’s blurred vision and the broken Greek lens – Lektionen aus der Griechenland-Krise“ – Dr. Stella Ladi

Abstract: Why has it been so difficult for the EU to find a solution for the Greek Euro-crisis and why do problems persist? The misjudgements of both, EU and Greek officials, and, along with the international economic community, their collective failure to see the Greek problem in its wider unity-draining context have compounded this problem. The focus to-date has been on the ways to resolve the crisis as an exclusively economic problem: whether less or more austerity, or even a temporary Grexit from the Eurozone, could solve it. In this context, even the discussion on intra-European „solidarity“ has been misleading. The lack of a clear vision on how to move collectively forward has reduced the notion of solidarity to a mere bargaining process between the rich North and the poor South. Stella Ladi’s lecture will focus the interconnected crises for Europe, the rise of Euroscepticism and populism, and the lessons from the Greek crisis that show that strengthening and preserving institutions can prove to be more important for the future of the EU than austerity measures.
STELLA LADI ist seit 2012 Senior Lecturer an der Queen Mary Universität in London. Zuvor war sie als Lecturer für Europäisierung und Public Policy an der Panteion University in Athen und als Public Policy-Expertin im griechischen Innenministerium, sowie dem ehem. Ministerium für die ägäischen Inseln tätig. Zu ihren Forschungsschwerpunkten gehören Public Policy, Reformprozesse öffentlicher Verwaltungen, Europäisierungsprozesse, Global Governance, sowie die Rolle von ExpertInnen in Policy-Prozessen. Zuletzt erschienen ihre Artkel „Global Public Policy and Transnational Administration“ (2015, Public Administration) und „Austerity Politics and Administrative Reform: The Eurozone Crisis and its Impact upon Greek Public Administration“ (2014, Comparative European Politics).
